Playing with Patterns

Playing with several different patterns doesn’t have to make a room look loud. If they aren’t deliberately chosen, there will be a clash that can be dizzying. But if you play it the right way, your design will sing in harmony.

Start with your most bold pattern and work the rest of your room’s details around this. When establishing a visual hierarchy you want your eye to be drawn in an intentional order, not bouncing around to several items competing for attention.

Stick with your color palette. When choosing a pattern of a completely different style and size, having one common theme will help create balance.

Spread your patterns across the room. If all the excitement is on one half of the room and the other is minimalist, things can look awkward. We placed our two patterned chairs across from a monochromatic sofa, but restored balance with patterned pillows and a rug tying the two together.
